In came a late night Slack, “Want to help put on a digital drag show?” The answer was obvious. But in 2020, Pride needed to look different. After a few busy nights we pivoted the idea from a drag show to Black Queer Town Hall, a 3-day event of discussions and performances centering Black, queer voices and raising money for The Okra Project, an organization feeding Black trans people.
The event raised over $250,000, earned coverage in the New York Times, brought in the legendary Angela Davis as well as superstars Laverne Cox, Todrick Hall, and MJ Rodriguez, and streamed to over 100,000 viewers on NYC Pride and GLAAD’s YouTube pages. Black Queer Town Hall was a small way to help fight racism, homophobia, and transphobia, and make the world more inclusive.
The Event
The Most Office Campaign
Then came the 2020 election, when it was more important than ever for Black, queer voices be heard. We worked with the town hall’s founders, Bob the Drag Queen and Peppermint to create a campaign dedicated to swinging the state of Pennsylvania blue. The idea? The Most Office — a campaign centered around doing The Most to help voters cast their ballots by mail.
With an original song, a music video, and a slew of social content we took a cheeky approach to education around voter suppression, the importance of participating, and all ways to vote during the pandemic. And we explicitly called out the 5 Pennsylvania counties who swung the 2016 election. The good news? This time 3 out of the 5 went blue.
Made completely pro bono.
